Report from China

Dear Mr. Tommy Maltell,
We couldn't give you a prompt reply due to the internal problem of our email system. Now here is the report on the status of China. Since joined RIF in 1996, RIF China has been doing his utmost in promoting Renju the game in China. It can be shown in several remarkable view. The "Compaq Cup" of Beijing International Open Tournament in 1997, the "Minsheng Banking Corp. Cup" of the 2nd World Youth Championship in 1998 where Chinese young players won 2 gold medals, one 2nd place and one 3rd place and the most significant tournament in Chinese Renju history, the 6th WC in 1999. For a non-governmental organization who under extreme financial express, it has been a hard job for RIF China. However, our efforts was not in vain, Chinese players won 9th place in group A, one Champion and one 3rd place in group B. RIF China now established its own office with 9 permanent staff and 15 part time staff. Besides, we also have 20 coaches, 53 players with Dan (name list attached) and thousands of players with Kyu. We also have one training school in Beijing. Every year, there are at least 10 competitions excludes one regular nationwide competition in every April. The rapid developing rate is also contribute to the TV programs and newspapers. RIF China masters a TV program on CCTV and it covers all over China. Nearly 50 kinds of newspapers ever reported Renju activities. This is a huge jump compares with 10 years ago when few people ever heard of the name "Renju" and its professional rules. With the support of Chinese Qi Yuan and China General Sports Association, RIF China will definitely do more in the coming new millennium.
We are grateful to the visit of Mister president and your wife. We also appreciate the continuous support from Japan Renju Sha since 1992 and the help from Swedish Renju Association. We pay great attention to the friendship between China and each member countries. We are proud of being one part of the Renju family. We understand that we have long way to go, so we must work hard. Hope that we will have some players like Mr.Nakamura and Mr.Meritee in future.

The email address for RIF China will be changed to mailto:rifchina@king-promise.com with immediate effect. Please send all your email to the new address.

INFO 3 - 3-d World Championship in RENJU among computer programs

Dear RENJU computer fans!!!
We plan to have next WC in Renju among computer programs in the end of July 28-30 of 2000 year in Moscow, Russia. As it was in previouse Championship it will be two World Championships.
First it starts 28 of July - Renju problems solving WC. It means that each program will try to solve 10 Renju problems. (You can try http://194.87.49.195/Renju/nosovsky/ to solve 1-st DAN TEST as practice of the championship.) Each participant able to send me one problem , which will be include to the WC 10 problems. (If it will be 8 participants I'll add 2 problems and 8 problems will be from participants). We need briliant idea problems , very difficult move which is key point in this problem. We don't need such problems like ordinary win of after 30-50 moves.
So, please suggest problems with key point aim. Program have to solve task for 1 hour. It is possible for operater to make moves (answers for other side). Problems have not be only VCT or VCF. It is not TSUME RENJU (as Japanese understand it) it means that it is possible to have problems with briliant nice pause (mise) among 10 WC problems (I hope that it will be one minimum).
Second is Renju Tournament WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.
It will be round robin Tournament with 2 games (Tentative Black and Tentative White) with each opponent. RIF rules are used, but only 24 openning is possible (not 26). 1 hour for 30 own moves then bayomi 10 own moves 20 minutes, then again the same bayomi.
Requairements to programs.
It is nessesary to have possibility to load *.pos files for participants of Solving WC. If you need computer from ORGANIZERS we can only suggest WINDOWS-98 compatable computers.
64RAM/366-450 Celeron, Pentium II mashines. You can bring your own computer if you want.
All programs need to have English Menu. If you want to only send protected version of your program to organizers please send it (or demo) in the begining of July. We have such experience last WC it was a lot of bugs in English Menu, using of programs. We need time to understand how it works and neet some time to govern those programs. If you want to visit Russia , please contact me (Alexander Nosovsky stigma.ltd@relcom.ru) I'll make invitation for your visa and book hotel.

Estonian bridge - and renjuplayer Lauri Naber has accomplished an unconventional effort. Namely, he won the Tartu Pair Championship in bridge and came second in Tallinn Pair Championship. Actually, it wouldn't be a big thing, but:the tournaments in Tartu and Tallinn were parallel and took place practically at the same time!! 9 tournaments were played on Mondays from February till April and in Tallinn 6 best percents were considered (one of them could be with a substitute), but in Tartu the sum of points for places was important. Lauri, who studies in Tartu, had no plan to participate in Tallinn Championship, but because the one in Tallinn began a week earlier than in Tartu, then he decided to play along on the first tournament. He made a joke that if he gets over 70% on the first tournament, then he will continue. He actually did get 71.5% (!) and in the end he missed the Tallinn title of champion scarcely because of the lousy game of his partner Ants Soosorv.
